Well it’s that time of year again! Sniffles, sneezes and coughing fills the air with tenacious germs waiting for an innocent host! That’s right, cold and flu season is staring us in the face as we speak!
So to help you get prepared we have come up with a list of 10 “must have” treatments for your home this season!
Working our way backwards, we begin with the first treatment on our list.
#10 Humidifier – There are many brands and styles of humidifiers out there, they come in all shapes , sizes and price ranges, but we like the Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler and Humidifier. It’s reasonable in price, portable in size and not too heavy. This excellent treatment is great for congestion or allergy relief.
#9 Disinfectant Wipes/sprays/hand disinfectants – Keeping commonly used areas like coffee tables, kitchens, bathrooms, and offices, clean and wiped down of those pesky germs and viruses! We like Lysol wipes and sprays for this, wipes for surface areas on the fly and spray for more intensive disinfecting. We also recommend Purrell Hand Sanitizer in the travel size for convenient storage in desks at work or purses or cars to help reduce the spreading of colds.
#8 Aromatherapy and Other Steamy Ideas- If you can find a great aromatherapy spray with Eucalyptus and Spearmint or an essential oil in a spritzer bottle directly into a steamy shower or hot bath is amazing natural treatment! You might also try Sudacare Shower Soothers these are tablets, you place at the bottom of your shower and when water hits it, it creates a vapor reaction and fills your shower with healing vapors. For those who are frugal and adventurous we found a great homemade recipe that you can add your own essential oils to create your unique treatment tabs!
# 7 Tissues- That’s right the noses have it! – There is nothing worse then having a raw and runny nose and then having to blow it with a rough tissue! We recommend the Puffs line of tissues, the lotion, aloe or new Vick’s brands are great to handle any tissue issue! The nose, knows!
#6 Throat Lozenges- Ok you are on an important phone call at work or have to give a presentation when it hits! That pesky tickle in the throat! What can you do? Water is not helping! If you were home we would tell you lemon and honey! But since that’s not always possible on the run, we recommend having some lozenges handy for just such emergencies! We love the Ricola brand lozenges the best! They come in a variety of flavors, like honey and lemon, and they are all natural!
# 5 Echinacea and Goldenseal Tablets – These two items must be used in combination to obtain the desired immune system boost treatment. If taken within 48 hours of onset of symptoms, you can reduce a cold’s duration by a substantial amount. There are many brands of this combination but we recommend Nature’s Way brand. It’s relatively inexpensive, about $8.00 a bottle. and can be ordered online and shipped right to your door or purchased at most Whole Food Markets.
#4 Zinc/Vitamin C- An additional 100 mg a day of zinc and 2000 mg a day of Vitamin C is needed to boost the compromised immune system, used in combination with Echinacea and Goldenseal will drastically reduce the symptoms and duration of effects of symptoms.
#3 Tea vs Coffee- In the case of a cold Celestial Seasonings teas have some wonderful blends to soothe and ease a cold/flu. Warm liquids help to break up mucus and open up blood vessels to allow more oxygen to flow. Coffee can be used as a detoxifier in a bath type of setting. Make a strong pot of coffee and pour directly into bath tepid/luke warm water and soak for 20 minutes, repeat this over the course of three days. Coffee has natural properties which draw out toxins and brings over all relief from symptoms. It is also recommended for colonic treatments!
#2 Best “Feel Better” treatments you can buy over the counter products: With all the products on the market it’s hard to tell if something is going to make you drowsy or deal with your specific symptoms. Dayquil Daytime and Musinex combined in the morning will offer you a far more comfortable day without the drowsy side effects you don’t want and Musinex with Nightquil is our choice for a more restful night. For those who prefer warm liquids we recommend TheraFlu products. For dry persistent coughing another good idea is to have honey and lemon with a bit of brandy or liquor mixed in as a back up! It’s sure to ease up those symptoms and allow you to rest comfortably.
#1 The number one choice for “must have” treatment during a cold and flu season is….. Sliced Onions and/ or garlic in a bowl or jar will absorb the virus’ right out of the air and then the onions will turn black and garlic brown. You simply throw them away, and replace with fresh cut onions or garlic. You can do this throughout the year. Place near bed or other high traffic areas. Personal experience says this works! Every year, we put onions all over the house and we rarely got sick and when we did, it did not spread to the other people around! It is a known fact that during the black plagues of 1918 those homes which used this old remedy were free of the disease. To find out more about how this works, click here.
There are probably tons of other “must haves” in your mom’s list but these are our favorites! We wish you good health and happiness this wintery season!
